Crimson Columbine

Alpine White Columbine

In the high country of Yosemite and environs above 9,500 feet, a pair of distinctly different Columbines have chosen to make their home: the showy Crimson Columbine (Aquilegia formosa), usually found along streams and in bogs and meadows at considerably lower elevations, and its equally striking, if somewhat more demure relative, the Alpine White Columbine (Aquilegia pubscens). Because of the proximity of these two cousins, each summer, in a very few very special places, a remarkable event occurs . . . as a result of the past year’s cross pollination by resident Hummingbirds, Hawkmoths and bees, the rocky slopes explode in a delightful kaleidoscope of reds, pinks, yellows, whites and lavenders.

All images on this page were photographed in early August, 2003-2005 along the western trail above Saddlebag Lake adjacent to Yosemite National Park, with a Nikon D-100 digital camera.
